Understanding the Spanish Civil War. On a hot summer’s day in 1936, a military coup trying to overthrow the government escalated into one of the most important historical events leading to the rise of fascism in Europe: The Spanish Civil War. This acute three-year conflict divided the Spanish population and territory in two—the Republicans, supported by international volunteer forces, versus the Nationalists, backed by the Fascist regimes of Mussolini and Hitler. Our 3.5 hour Spanish Civil War tour in Madrid, guided by an expert guide, will focus on the origins of the war, visiting sites associated with wartime events and covering daily life during the war and Nationalist Francisco Franco’s eventual Fascist dictatorship.
El Escorial
Located a short bus ride from Madrid, the monarchical complex of San Lorenzo de El Escorial—situated on a hilltop with stunning views over the Spanish landscape—is critical to understanding Spanish power and politics in the 16th and 17th centuries. A sprawling, palatial complex, El Escorial occupied a central role in Spanish political history as a seat of power outside of the urban center of Madrid, and in this way provides an interesting contrast to Versailles and other rural royal residences throughout Europe. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's a major must-see site. This El Escorial tour will draw connections between politics and religion in 16th century Spain, putting the stunning landmark in a new perspective.
Add another day to your trip and consider:
Toledo day trip from Madrid. A center of culture and religion since the Middle Ages, Toledo has been home to Jews, Christians, and Muslims from the Maghreb. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the churches, synagogues, and mosques that dot this beautifully preserved city are a testimony to the heterogenous history of Europe. During this full day trip from Madrid to Toledo, we'll join a historian to explore the architectural and social history of Toledo, offering insight into the city that is traditionally known as ‘the melting pot of three cultures."
Segovia day trip from Madrid. With a fantastic array of monuments from Roman, medieval and Renaissance times, Segovia is one of the best preserved historic cities in Castile. Its charming medieval streets and squares are dotted with Romanesque churches, Gothic private homes, and Renaissance palaces earning it a place on the UNESCO Heritage list in 1985. Our Segovia day trip from Madrid, in the company of an expert guide, provides an excellent introduction to the many special cultural facets to this exceptional city.

An Afternoon with Picasso. No artist shaped the twentieth century more than Pablo Ruiz y Picasso. Born in 1881 in Malaga, southern Spain, Picasso's immense talent was spotted at a young age and was first fostered under the tutelage of his father, also an artist, when the family moved to Barcelona in 1895. Our in-depth, 3 hour, Barcelona Picasso Tour focuses on these formative years of Picasso's life. Led by a local art historian, our private or small-group tour will visit the Picasso Museum and other key sites related to his time in the city, his first inspirations, and the influence of the bohemian circles in Barcelona at the time.

The Spanish Civil War in Catalonia. George Orwell—British novelist, essayist, and critic—arrived in Barcelona in 1936 with the paperwork necessary to find work as a war correspondent. Transitioning from writer to soldier, Orwell joined the fight against Fascism during the Spanish Civil War, a three year conflict which tore Spain apart as two groups of differing political ideologies grappled for control. This 3-hour walking tour explores the Spanish Civil War in Barcelona and follows Orwell's footsteps during the 1937 May Revolution, described in the author's classic book. It is designed to give visitors a clearer picture of the Spanish Civil War and its impact on Barcelona.

POST-TOUR OPTION TO THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO
The Camino de Santiago
The Camino de Santiago has been traversed for thousands of years by saints, sinners, generals, misfits, kings, and queens. Pilgrims make their way to the tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, North-West of Spain.
For centuries, the Camino was a long and dangerous journey undertaken as an act of penance and religious devotion. The journey started at the pilgrim’s home and continued by foot until they reached Santiago. Once they returned home, either by foot, horseback or boat, pilgrims presented the scallop shell as proof they completed the pilgrimage since the shells are indigenous to the Galician coast.
Today, everyone has their own personal “Buen Camino”, and we see the scallop shell at every turn, guiding us on milestone markers and wearing them on our backpacks. Whether you choose to begin in France for the complete 40 days or do the last 7 days as many do, The Way is an unforgettable experience combining the religious traditions and icons built here from the 9th century and the nature and beauty God created. There are many Camino routes that lead to Santiago, and it is easy to follow on your own. We can help you choose a route, reserve accommodations along the way, and have your bags waiting when you get there. If you might be interested in doing The Way, contact us and we can help you with the logistics.
