PRE-TOUR OPTION - Rio de janeiro and the Iguaçu FALLS
Day 1. Arrive Rio de Janeiro. The bustling city of Rio de Janeiro has been one of Brazil’s most popular and frequented tourist destinations for decades. Its vibrant city centre is bursting with culture and pulsating with a deep sense of history and heritage. Rio, as it is commonly known, is the second largest city in Brazil and the third largest metropolis in the whole of South America.
Whether it is the statue of Christ perched atop Corcovado mountain or the Sugarloaf cable car, the hoards kite-surfing off Barra beach or dancing to samba on the smooth slopes of Pedra do Sal rock, this is a city and landscape turned playground, where life isn’t taken too seriously and the twists and turns of the daily political and economic soap opera has ingrained a rueful cheeriness and creativity in its people.
Set along the famous Copacabana Beach, our hotel is minutes from popular restaurants, local shops and famous nightlife. We’ll begin our orientation walk with a stroll along the u-shaped beach. The Avenida Atlantica boardwalk follows the beach and is lined with restaurants and shops. Enroute we’ll try Brazil’s favorite sparkling beverage, made from the red Amazonian Guaraná berries, as you sit above the waves.
The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the area.
Tonight: Included Welcome Dinner.
But first ... SAMBA! No music defines Rio de Janeiro better than samba. It’s the rhythm that endlessly courses down the city’s streets, putting a subtle shake in anyone’s hips. There is no better place to learn the tricky steps of samba than Rio de Janeiro, a city that’s home to some of the world’s most renowned samba dancers. We’ll begin our evening with a 1-hour private Samba lesson before we head to dinner.
Brazilian Churrascaria. We’ve burned our calories dancing the samba, and will continue our evening filled with a Brazilian gastronomic feast! Churrasco is a Brazilian barbecue method where juicy pieces, slices, steaks, and chops of beef, veal, lamb, pork, and chicken are placed on big skewers and grilled over wood fire. It started in the early 1800s when the Gauchos (European immigrants that settled in the Rio Grade do Sul area) would get together and start a fire, adding large portions of meat on skewers and slowly grilling the meat.
Overnight in Rio, 2 nights.
Day 2. A Day in Rio
Today we’ll have a full day exploring the highlights of Rio. With our private guide, we’ll drive by the traditional Cinelandia Square where the various historic buildings such as the Municipal Theater, the National Library and the National Museum of Fine Arts are located. Pass the Sambadrome, where Carnival’s samba competition takes place, and stop at the Metropolitan Cathedral, famous for its unusual architecture. When we reach the Urca neighborhood, we’ll board a glassed-in cable car for to ascent to the peak, stopping once at a scenic viewpoint. Upon reaching the top of Sugar Loaf at 1,299 feet (396 meters) above sea level, we’ll admire the views of Niteroi, Copacabana and Santa Cruz Fortress.
Lunch will be included today. You’ll disembark at Cosme Velho station to take the cog train through the Tijuca Rain Forest. When you reach the top, lace up your shoes and climb the 220 steps or opt for the easier route by riding the elevator. At the 2,300-foot (700-meter) summit, find yourself in the presence of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. Listen as your guide explains the history of the statue, constructed in 1931 from concrete and sandstone and named one of the Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. The statue’s armspan is 98 feet (30 meters,) and it stands 130 feet (39 meters) tall. Spend half an hour admiring the statue and taking photos of the panoramic views of Rio.
Tonight: Dinner is on your own.
Day 3: Travel Rio to Iguaçu - Brazilian Side
This morning we’ll be transported to the airport for our included flight to Iguaçu. The Iguaçu National Park along with its “sister” park in Argentina form the most significant remaining rainforest in the southern cone of South America which along with the waterfalls have been declared a National Heritage Site by UNESCO. The falls of the Iguaçu River form the border between Argentina and Brazil. The 275 falls make up the largest waterfall system in the world. Since we are beginning in Rio, we will tour the Brazilian side.
Brazilian Falls: Our trip begins at the Iguaçu National Park where we drive through the lush, subtropical vegetation of the park en route to the falls. Stroll the trail descending the canyon that offers a panoramic view of the more than 240 falls. Take the glass elevator up the cliff face for an exquisite view from the upper deck. On the Brazilian side, you can walk almost in to the Devil’s Throat - and yes, you will get wet. Most of the other falls are further away, but you get great panoramic views of them.
