Picture it. Reading, like travel, allows us to discover worlds we might otherwise never experience. Books have the power to transport us to another place or time ... something we could all use right now.
Read it. In 2020, Che Bella Tours prepared a series of books and movies about London and the English Countryside. Our book club met every month on Zoom, which set the stage for this trip of a lifetime.
Live it. We read, we Zoomed and now our Book Club is off to Italy! This itinerary is specifically planned to bring literature alive as we experience “in person” the places, scenes, characters, history, authors and cuisine featured in the books. We do have a few spots available. Would you like to join us? We can provide you our complete book and movie list, or just come and enjoy the trip. It's going to be a fun group.

NEW! Dig a Little Deeper Series
Murano. Travel by private boat to the island of Murano to see the famous Venetian glassblowers at work.
The Ecology of Venice. Venice is a city that should not exist, yet still does. The city itself is a masterpiece, comprised of 117 tiny islands connected by 400 bridges over 150 canals. The city is separated from the Adriatic Sea by the lagoon and thin stretch of land. When the tide rises, the seawater enters the lagoon; when the tide falls, it exits. This happens twice a day, every day. Sometimes weather contributes to unusually high tides, which typically last between two and four hours. This is called the Aqua Alta. In November of 2020, the Aqua Alta plunged more than 80 percent of the city under water. Venice just might be the earth's canary in the coal mine, and a glimpse in to what the future might bring to many coastal cities. Who knows whether technology and/or human behavior will save it? This afternoon tour is led by a local ecologist. You'll learn how Venice was built, the engineering that sustains it, and the critical threats facing it. This is an excellent tour for those interested in learning about the engineering, ecology, and architecture of the city. You'll see where urban maintenance (canal dredging, relaying cables, raising walkways) is being carried out, and gain a better understanding of the techniques involved in safeguarding its future.
Venice Jewish Ghetto Tour. Venice has one of the oldest, most enduring Jewish cultures in Europe. This afternoon tour takes you to the home of the Jewish Venetian community so vividly depicted in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. Founded in 1516, its serene nature has entranced visitors and locals alike for centuries, providing a respite from the city's many bustling streets. Led by a local scholar of Jewish history, you'll visit sites of historical importance throughout Venice's deeply important Jewish Ghetto, including the Jewish Museum and Synagogues, as well as two moving memorials to Italian Jews lost in World Wars I and II.
Venetian Mask Making. This is a fun activity for any age. Surrounded by artisan masks of every size and shape, you'll learn about the meaning and history of Venetian Carnival masks. You'll then choose one of over sixty different types of white Venetian masks, and learn how to decorate using a variety of techniques and materials,
Evening Cicchetti Tour. Enjoy the beloved Italian tradition of cicchetti. In Italy, the hour of the aperitivo is the quintessence of la dolce vita—a glass of wine or cocktail, a variety of light bites to eat, and good company. With our local guides, we'll venture to the bacari taverns where to rub shoulders with residents, enjoy a wide variety of small plate delicacies and of course imbibe in a glass or two of Prosecco, Bellini or an Aperol Spritz.

The Medici Tour. This afternoon tour examines the relationship between power and art, the political upheavals gave birth to the artistic revolutions of the Renaissance, and the humanistic impulse of one of the most interesting families in history, the Medici. We'll focus on the history and patronage of the family, visiting several key sites connected with them, including the Palazzo Vecchio, Medici Chapels and Medici Palace. We'll trace the family from the era of the Republic to the era of the duchy, and their rise from rich merchants to rulers of a kingdom. We will examine the work of Michelangelo, in the family chapel he created, which includes the tombs of Lorenzo il Magnifico and brother Giuliano.
Made in Florence Artisans Tour and Shopping. The Florentine tradition of producing artisanal goods has been in existence for centuries and remains one of the cornerstones of Florence's visual and social history. This unique tour supports local artisans and celebrates the tradition of craftsmanship. Florentine leatherworkers, silversmiths, shoemakers, and milliners continue to practice their crafts building upon methods passed down through generations. We will visit the private workshops of these distinguished individuals, providing a behind the scenes look at the current state of artisan production. Along the way, your guide will guide you to fashion items, jewelry, ceramics, culinary products and much more…
Galileo and Science in Renaissance Florence. The rule of the Medici family in Renaissance-era Florence led to an explosion of scientific progress, especially astronomy. Under their rule, Florence became a shining beacon for experimentation, which the Roman church was frantically trying to suppress with the Inquisition. At the same time, humanism, stemming from the study of ancient Greek and Latin texts, was a new way of thinking about a man’s place in the world, and became a recurring theme in Renaissance literature, art and society. This tour includes a visit to the Museo Galileo, where the most important Medicean collections of scientific instruments are preserved. After visiting the museum, we will head to the center of town in order to trace the role of humanism in Renaissance Florence; be it through a delve into the poetry of Dante and Petrarch, a discussion of the drastic changes in the art of the period or of the growing interest in the study of the traditional liberal arts.
Fresco Workshop. Learn the Fresco technique and create your own masterpiece with a local artist. Fresco means fresh in Italian, and is the revered art of painting on fast-drying damp plaster with water based pigments. During this 3-hour workshop, you'll learn basic fresco technique from a local Florentine artist, who will take you through the steps of preparing a surface, drawing and transferring a drawing (cartoon), and finally applying the paint. Be warned. It's difficult. It's also a lot of fun and you'll go home with our own hand-made fresco painting. Along the way, you'll gain a deeper, tactile understanding of the development, creation, and legacy of Renaissance art.

This morning we leave Florence and head to our Tuscan villa. Enroute, you’ll make a short stop at the American WWII Memorial Cemetery. This is a well maintained and respectful cemetery just outside of Florence, with manicured lawns, acres of white crosses and a few stars. The presentation is very respectful of our soldiers, serves as a remembrance of the price of freedom, and captures the spirit of the sacrifices made by the men and women who fought during WW2. The American Battle Monuments Commission does an excellent job of maintaining the grounds and the officer on duty is always ready to answer questions.

As the sun sets over Tuscany, we’ll head to a private rooftop towering over Siena's famous Campo to enjoy a buffet dinner of local Tuscan delicacies and of course, a variety of Tuscan wines - all while being serenaded by a guitarist and surrounded by breathtaking views. After a buffet dinner and dancing on the rooftop, we’ll be transfered back to our villa.
This morning your guide will pick you up at your hotel to enjoy a private tour of Ancient Rome, including the Capitoline, Forum and Colosseum. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your leisure.
In that area after the tour, you might want to think about:
• Visiting the Wedding Cake (Tomb of Victor Emmanuel) and go up the elevator for a great view of Ancient Rome, then go next door to the Capitoline Museum which is really good. Then go over and see Michelangelo’s Moses at St. Peter’s in Chains.
• San Clemente, a church where you can walk down various levels to view centuries of archaeological finds.
• Stroll up Via del Corso and do some shopping and finish at the Spanish Steps. The Spanish Steps are crowded, and are ... steps, but a good afternoon destination for gelato and people watching. This is also at the top of a major shopping district in Rome - Via Condotti.
• Walking along the Tiber and then visiting the synagogue at the ghetto, or Jewish Quarter. There is a whole lively street of great restaurant choices. Not to be missed: The Jewish Artichoke! This local treat dates back to Imperial times, when the Roman Jewish community numbered about 50,000. They look like golden sunflowers and their leaves have a delicious nutty crunchiness. You can also visit the synagogue after lunch. You don’t need advanced reservations, but can go get tickets before lunch for an afternoon tour.
