Day 1. Mon, Nov 8. Arrive Tokyo

Welcome to Tokyo—a dazzling metropolis where ancient tradition and cutting-edge modernity exist side by side. From serene temples tucked between skyscrapers to neon-lit districts that pulse with energy, Tokyo offers a sensory introduction to Japan unlike anywhere else. As you arrive, you’ll immediately notice the city’s remarkable efficiency, cleanliness, and deep cultural respect embedded in everyday life.

Your private driver will be waiting for you as you exit baggage claim and transfer you to our hotel.

Early arrivals: The flight from the US to Tokyo can be anywhere from 10 to 16 hours, depending on where you are flying from, so we highly recommend coming in early on Nov 7 for a pre-tour room to get rid of jet lag and avoid missing anything due to flight delays.

Nov 8 - 12.  4 nights with breakfast

Included Welcome dinner. We will begin our tour with a traditional Teppanyaki experience, a memorable blend of fine dining and entertainment. We will watch our chefs cook our meal on a flat iron grill, combining culinary skill with live performance. This experience features premium ingredients like wagyu beef, seafood, and vegetables, expertly prepared with precision, flair, and occasional bursts of flame.

Day 2. Tues, Nov 9. Tokyo Shrines, Temples and Views

Our full-day private tour begins with a visit to the Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the spirits of the Emperor, and enjoy a Kagura ceremonial blessing with origins that date to the 8th century.

We then continue to the historic Sensoji Temple, Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, where incense fills the air and centuries-old traditions remain alive. Nearby, a stroll down Nakamise Street reveals a lively row of traditional snacks and handcrafted souvenirs.

Our day culminates at the soaring Tokyo Skytree, offering panoramic views of the vast city—a striking reminder of Tokyo’s scale and sophistication.

The evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure.

OPTIONAL: For those of you who are sushi eaters,
join us for an unforgettable evening, it's part meal, part performance, part cultural experience ... the purest expression of Japanese dining craftsmanship.

Day 3. Wed, Nov 10. A Day in Tokyo

We'll begin our day with an included foodie tour and sushi making class at the bustling Tsukiji Outer Market, where the spirit of Japan’s seafood trade lives on through vibrant stalls and sizzling street food. Japanese cuisine, known globally as washoku, is a refined culinary tradition rooted in seasonality, balance, and presentation. Meals emphasize fresh, high-quality ingredients prepared simply to highlight natural flavors. Staples include rice, seafood, miso soup, and delicately arranged side dishes. From sushi and tempura to ramen and street food, dining in Japan is as much an art form as it is nourishment, with deep ties to cultural rituals and aesthetics.

The rest of the day is yours to explore at your leisure. Tokyo’s neighborhoods each offer their own personality, blending hyper-modern culture with quiet moments of reflection—perfect for discovering your own connection to Japan’s capital.

• Take a guided visit to the Tokyo National Museum, Japan's oldest and largest art museum. As you move through its galleries, the story of Japan unfolds — from ancient Asian antiquities to exquisite collections of art, photographs, and rare books. It is located in one of Tokyo's largest parks.

• Wander through the fashion-forward streets of Harajuku.
• Head to charming Yanaka, one of the few Tokyo neighborhoods to come through the war years unscathed, to visit the home and studio of a renowned artist of Nihonga, Japanese painting using traditional materials made of natural pigments. From here it is a short walk to Yanaka Ginza, the shopping street where pre-war shops mix with very contemporary art galleries.
• Enjoy tranquil gardens like Shinjuku Gyoen.

• Step into the world of sumo at a professional wrestling stable. Here, you'll witness the wrestlers' daily routines: disciplined warm-ups, time-honored rituals, and intense sparring sessions, all illuminated by a guide who reveals the cultural traditions behind this iconic sport.

Day 4. Thursday, Nov 11: To Hakone

Leaving the urban sprawl behind, our journey to Hakone reveals a softer, more scenic side of Japan. Nestled in the mountains and famous for hot springs, Hakone has long been a retreat for travelers seeking relaxation. Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest peak and most enduring symbol. From Hakone, Fuji reveals itself on clear days

Our exploration begins in Owakudani, a dramatic volcanic valley still steaming with geothermal activity. We'll get an arial view of the area on the Hakone Ropeway. From our gondola style cable cars, we see how the scenery shifts from forested mountains to the stark, steaming geothermic vents. A whimsical pirate-style cruise across the
Lake Ashi adds a playful touch to our journey before we arrive at the serene Hakone Shrine. This is one of the most spiritually significant sites in Hakone. Founded in the 8th century, the shrine was long revered by samurai and travelers seeking protection and safe journeys. A pathway lined with towering cedar trees and traditional stone lanterns leads you upward from the lake, creating a peaceful, almost mystical atmosphere. At the water’s edge stands the iconic vermilion torii gate — one of Japan’s most photographed spiritual landmarks and a symbol of the boundary between the physical and sacred worlds.

Our day concludes at our traditional Ryokan. A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn, where guests experience tatami-matted rooms, futon bedding, and attentive hospitality. It is about cultural immersion and tranquility.

Nov 11. 1 night with included dinner and breakfast.

Tonight: Included Kaiseki Dinner. Kaiseki is Japan’s haute cuisine, a multi-course meal that celebrates seasonal ingredients, artistic presentation, and harmony of flavors. Each dish is thoughtfully curated, reflecting nature and the passage of time.

Day 5. Fri, Nov 12. Hakone to Matsumoto and Takayama

Start your day this morning strolling the grassy hillsides of Hakone’s Open Air Museum, admiring the sculptures and artworks on display, including pieces by Henry Moore and Rodin. The museum also features one of the world’s finest Picasso exhibits, with over 100 works by the cubist master.

Today we travel into the Japanese Alps to Matsumoto and the iconic Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s oldest original castles, often called the “Crow Castle” for its striking black exterior.

At the end of the day, we will arrive in Takayama, a beautifully preserved town that evokes Japan’s Edo-period past. Narrow streets, wooden merchant houses, and traditional sake breweries create an atmosphere that feels untouched by time.

Included dinner
Nov 12 - 14.  2 nights with breakfast

Day 6: Sat, Nov 13. Takayama and the Goka Yama Region

This morning, we explore Takayama’s historic Sannomachi Street, where Edo-era merchant homes now house craft shops and sake breweries.

We will enjoy a lesson in sake-making and tasting at a local brewery before having having an included lunch at a local restaurant known for its Hida beef, a premium variety of wagyu raised in the mountainous region of Takayama. Renowned for its exceptional marbling, tenderness, and rich, buttery flavor, Hida beef is considered one of Japan’s top regional beef brands.

Get your cameras out, because after lunch, we journey onward to the rural Gokayama region, known for its isolated mountain villages. In Shirakawa-go, marvel at the unique gassho-zukuri farmhouses with steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall.

Our day will end back in Takayama, where you will have the evening to enjoy at your leisure.

Day 7: Sun, Nov 14. To Hiroshima

This morning we take 2-hour Bullet Train to Hiroshima. Train travel in Japan is one of the most efficient and enjoyable ways to explore the country, with an extensive network that connects even remote regions with remarkable punctuality. The iconic Shinkansen, or bullet train, is the crown jewel of this system, renowned for its speed, smooth ride and precision timing. Traveling at speeds of up to 200 mph, the Shinkansen offers a quiet, comfortable journey with spacious seating and large windows, often revealing scenic views of the countryside, and on clear days, even glimpses of Mount Fuji. More than just transportation, it reflects Japan’s commitment to innovation, safety, and seamless travel.

When we arrive, we will enjoy an okonomiyaki lunch, a casual, hearty, and interactive Japanese dining experience centered around okonomiyaki, a savory pancake made from a batter of flour, eggs, shredded cabbage, and a variety of ingredients such as pork, seafood, or cheese. The name okonomiyaki loosely translates to “grilled as you like it,” reflecting its customizable nature. Typically cooked on a flat iron griddle (teppan), okonomiyaki is often prepared right at the table, making the meal both social and entertaining. Once cooked, it’s topped with a rich, slightly sweet sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, seaweed flakes, and dancing bonito flakes that move from the heat.

Hiroshima. Nov 14 - 16.  2 nights with breakfast

Day 8. Mon, Nov 15: A Day in Hiroshima

In Hiroshima, history takes a profound turn. At the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and museum, we will reflect on the events of 1945 and the city’s message of peace.

We will then continue to Miyajimaguchi and ferry across to Miyajima, home to the iconic Itsukushima Shrine. Here, sacred deer roam freely and the floating torii gate stands as one of Japan’s most photographed sights. The surrounding island, with its forested hills and free-roaming deer, adds to the shrine’s tranquil and mystical atmosphere.

Tonight is yours to enjoy at your leisure.

Day 9. Tues, Nov 16. To Kyoto

We travel by bullet train again to Kyoto, the country’s cultural heart.

When we arrive, we will visit the mesmerizing Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up the mountainside. The path creates a spiritual and visually striking experience before settling into our Kyoto hotel.

Kyoto Nov 16 - 19. 3 nights with included breakfast
Included dinner

Day 10. Wed, Nov 17. A Day in Kyoto

Our morning begins at Kinkaku-ji, a Zen temple shimmering in gold leaf beside a reflective pond. Continue to the tranquil Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, where towering stalks sway gently overhead.

Traditional tea ceremony, an elegant ritual rooted in Zen philosophy, before strolling through Gion, where glimpses of geisha culture, still endure.

The evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure.

Day 11. Thursday, Nov 18. A Day in Kyoto

Today we enjoy another day of culture and crafts in Kyoto.

Kintsugi: Learn the philosophy of repairing broken pottery with gold—turning flaws into beauty. This centuries-old art emphasizes resilience and imperfection. We will then visit the Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) temple and stroll along the creek-side Philosopher’s Walk.

In the afternoon, we are on to the Nishijin neighborhood with a walking tour of this traditional Kyoto textile area and a stop to see either an indigo dyer or a weaver of contemporary textiles based on ancient designs. Finish at a traditional garden Ryoan-ji, to take in its stark, 15-rock simplicity. Our day will finish at the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design

Included dinner: Tonight we enjoy an included dinner in a restaurant tonight located in one of the lovely old sukiya-style houses in the Ponto Cho Geisha District. In addition to Ponto-cho, the old Gion district is home to another one of the four communities of Geisha in Kyoto. This beautifully preserved area is the perfect way to see Kyoto the way it looked up to 150 years ago.

Day 12. Fri, Nov 19. Mt. Koya

This morning, we leave Kyotoa and travel to Koya-san and visit the Kongobuji Temple, the spiritual and administrative heart of Mount Koya and the head temple of Shingon Buddhism. The temple complex is renowned for its serene atmosphere and refined architectural beauty. Inside, visitors walk across polished wooden corridors into expansive tatami rooms adorned with exquisite fusuma (sliding door) paintings, many depicting cranes, pine trees, and seasonal landscapes symbolizing longevity and harmony. One of the most remarkable features is the Banryūtei Rock Garden, the largest rock garden in Japan. Its carefully arranged stones are said to represent a pair of dragons emerging from clouds, a powerful symbol in Buddhist cosmology.

Tonight we will stay at the Koyan-san Temple. A temple stay in Mount Koya, known as a shukubō, is one of Japan’s most immersive cultural and spiritual experiences. Rather than a conventional hotel, you’ll stay within a working Buddhist temple, where the rhythm of your visit follows centuries-old monastic traditions rooted in Shingon Buddhism, founded by the monk Kūkai in the 9th century. Your accommodation is simple yet elegant: tatami-matted rooms, sliding paper doors, and futon bedding laid out in the evening. The atmosphere is quiet and contemplative, encouraging you to slow down and disconnect from the outside world.

Included Dinner: One of the highlights is dinner: shōjin ryōri, is a beautifully prepared vegetarian cuisine developed by Buddhist monks. These meals emphasize seasonal ingredients, balance, and mindfulness, transforming simplicity into an art form.

Day 13. Sat, Nov 20. Mt. Koya and on to Osaka

For those of you who would like, you can begin your day participating in early morning prayers, where monks chant sutras in a dimly lit hall filled with incense. Beyond the temple grounds, you can explore sacred sites like Okunoin Cemetery, a mystical forest pathway lined with ancient cedar trees and thousands of moss-covered gravestones.

We will then head to Osaka Castle. It's a journey into Japan’s feudal era, where ambition, strategy, and legacy converged to shape the country’s history.

Osaka. Nov 19 - 21. 2 nights with breakfast.

This evening: Included foodie tour at the lively Dotonbori, Osaka’s most famous entertainment district, centered on a canal lined with neon billboards, restaurants, and theaters. This is one of the most fun, social, and immersive ways to experience Osaka at night, blending street food, nightlife, and Japanese pop culture into one seamless experience.

We'll begin our guided walk through Dotonbori’s neon-lit streets, where our local guide will introduce us to Osaka’s reputation as “Japan’s kitchen.” We’ll sample iconic dishes while weaving through hidden alleys like Hozenji Yokocho for a more authentic, local feel.

As the night progresses, the experience becomes more social, transitioning into bar hopping, where we will visit a few local spots and even learn about Japan's extensive whiskey culture.

This will gear us up for our final stop: karaoke, a beloved Japanese pastime that actually originated in Osaka. It’s relaxed, fun and hilarious, making it a perfect way to end the evening.

Day 14. Sun, Nov 21. A Day in Osaka

Enjoy a leisurely day to explore Osaka.

• Sleep in
• Get a massage
• Shop in Shinsaibashi, with a huge mix of global brands and Japanese fashion and goods at all price points
